Florida Statute 943.0435 requires anyone designated a sexual offender to register in person with the sheriff and keep that registration current for life unless a court removes the requirement. The deadlines are brutally short — most obligations run on a 48-hour clock — and missing one is a felony.
Core requirements under § 943.0435
- Initial registration: in person at the sheriff’s office within 48 hours of establishing residence or release.
- Re-registration: twice a year (birthday month + 6 months later) — or four times a year for the most serious qualifying offenses.
- 48-hour updates: any change of address, name, employment, vehicles — and email addresses and internet identifiers (social media accounts count).
Penalties for failure to register
- Failing to register, update, or report changes: third-degree felony — up to 5 years in prison.
- Reporting intent to leave Florida and staying: second-degree felony.
- If no prison is imposed, the statute mandates community control with electronic monitoring — 6 months minimum on a first violation, more on repeats.
The detail most people miss
Registration is not always forever. After 25 years arrest-free following release, an offender whose conviction was not among the most serious categories can petition the court for removal from the registry if the court finds no current or potential threat to public safety. Few registrants ever learn this exists.
